The new job has me traveling so I have not been able to keep tabs on what's been happening...I did hear about an exchange between Selectman Furno & John Dean...I have not really heard what it was about, but, the uproar seems to be about her having the gall to question John Dean about something...anybody who thinks that is incorrect needs to take a step back...all selectmen are elected to keep tabs on town doings...that includes employee's of the town...I welcome Karin to share her side of the story...as I have said a million times...if you think you can do better, pull papers and run...
At the end of the day, it does not matter how long you have worked anywhere, it's totally irrelevant...it's also totally irrelevant how much money the person is paid to do the job...it's job performance...period. If some citizens have questions about town employee's performance, it is the selectmen's job to ask questions...that's why we elect them. It's funny how we don't hear much about selectmen who say nothing...that concerns me more. What say you Abe ?
I've also heard people are airing out people's personal finances...what the hell is wrong with you people ?? You don't think the argument couldn't be made the other way ?? It's funny how that works around here...
As an FYI...there have been some comments posted as of late that have been "sketchy" at best...I'm not going to let that go on here...let's discuss issues and leave name calling for the other site...I know sometimes it's hard, I've got sucked in myself...but, people call me out on it and I appreciate it...I can admit when I'm wrong.
Red Sox have clinched a Play Off spot...I still want the Division. Patriots look unbeatable.

Once again some peoples thinking are way off base! Yes the BOS can question the town employee’s performance. But Mr. Dean is not an employee of the town under the management of the BOS, an elected official, he only answers to the voters! He attends the BOS meetings to let the town know about things that are going on in town via the taped meetings. He has no obligations to attend those meetings, even if summoned, or answer the BOS questions. He is the only Highway Surveyor I can remember going to the BOS meetings.
He has extended this courteous to the BOS but if I were giving the Highway Surveyor advice. I’d tell him to have the cable tape a monthly report to the citizens of the town and have it aired on cable. Then he could hold a monthly night at the Municipal Center for any resident who wishes to speak to him or continue to return calls when individuals have questions/concerns for him. Then I would tell the BOS to take a hike (or as BBaker says GFY!)
If job performance is important, then so is the amount of money the person is making. If the town votes to grossly underpay someone in the job they are doing and then treat them horribly, then this says something about the BOS. The next guy/gal who takes the job will get paid at least three times the amount! The only thing this highway surveyor has done wrong is worked diligently for the town and keep the town informed through the BOS meetings.
Mrs. Furno does not know how to treat people. Everything she does gives insight to the unprofessionalism and lack of human respect she shows toward everyone that comes before the board and her co-selectmen.
For the record:
The Highway Surveyor is elected.
He need not cow-tow to any member of the BOS.
If you don't believe me, ask around.
You know what anonymous...the ex-chief thought the same thing (although not elected but felt being a strong chief made him untouchable)...he may be elected, doesn't mean he is above the scrutiny of the tax payer...up until a year ago John Dean walked on water for me...and then I saw a side I didn't like...and he knows what I'm talking about...and his daughter has been on a smear campaign...who's kidding who Stan ?
I say you want respect, put your personal crap aside and work for ALL taxpayers of Millville...even the ones carrying the burden of the tax load...that is word up and you know it..that's if we're putting all our cards on the table...the population of Millville is about 3500 or so...in my eyes, there are 3500 share holders...doesn't matter how old your share is ;-)
And I attend ATM's (Annual Town Meetings)...I'm not sure why John Dean insists on taking the pay he gets...it seems like that's what he wants...when I first heard about this I raised a ruckus...I'm not sure how the town pays him this legally...but I'm learning it's very hard to scrutinize somebody who's grossly underpaid...he's either a saint or sly as a fox...I love the guy but I've seen some recent behavior that troubles me...the latest being his attempted disruption of public safety day...I'm not sure what happened there until Santa showed up in early August..that was kind of troubling...and I wasn't alone in that assessment...
You really never cease to amaze me there BK. You really need to get a better perspective. Your claims in your reply regarding the status of the Highway Surveyor are comical. He answers to the voters not your pals at 8 Central St. Maybe they rolled over for your crazy claims, but JFD does not have to. By the way the voters spoke about your candidacy, very overwhelming I might add.
John doesn't need me nor anyone else to defend him. Those that know John, and his commitment to the community know full well that these new impostors - put yourself in that category too there BK, can't hold a candle to JFD's service.
If you want to pick on someone, try Lurch or the Queen. Oh, that is right they are your pals, they sanction your illegal businesses, and the drunken foolery that is Afonso Estates.
I know for a fact there BK you are barking up the wrong tree regarding Stan. You really are a dope if you can't figure out who that is.
Disrupting Public Safety Day? Please, give me a break. JFD was serving the public safety operations before you were hatched.
Your note says you are on the road now, that is good. Do us a favor, stay in seedy hotels with no internet access, that way you won't make more of a fool of yourself.
"the latest being his attempted disruption of public safety day...I'm not sure what happened there until Santa showed up in early August..that was kind of troubling..."
"I'm not going to let that go on here...let's discuss issues and leave name calling for the other site..."
Bobby~Talking out both sides??
Brothers Keeper, I believe anonymous said that the Highway is only responsible to the voters since he is elected.
Who is on a smear campaign now? I dont think you will win this one, it may only hurt your chances at another election.
How dear you criticize a man who has devoted his life to his family and his town. You have no idea how good a job he does behind the scene, taking calls all hours of the night, on vacations, going out on calls for weather, accident related incidents.
He has worked for the people of Millville as hard as anyone ever has. He does not have to answer to you or the bos, only the voters. As far a smear campaign, what the heck to call this!!!
People who don't know this man shouldn't criticize. Someday you will get your wish and he will retire from the town, but only when he or the voters say so, not you, the bos, or people of the new, new village.
"As an FYI...there have been some comments posted as of late that have been "sketchy" at best...I'm not going to let that go on here...let's discuss issues and leave name calling for the other site...I know sometimes it's hard, I've got sucked in myself...but, people call me out on it and I appreciate it...I can admit when I'm wrong".
He says that. Then goes on to make the comment about "until Santa showed up in early August". How ignorant is that? Even my teenage son thought that was a bit rude.He found no humor in it. He has the upmost respect for Mr Dean. He has even shown Mr Baker that respect (not that he deserves)it but because he is an adult. Mr Dean will be happy to know that the respect my son has for him is genuine not only because he is an adult but because he earned it.
I read his recent rantings I had to laugh this guy is a Big Joke. Is he anymore transparent? He does not write on his "Blog" for weeks then he finds the "time" to come back and make the comments he does. "Heard I missed some fireworks- The new job has me traveling so I have not been able to keep tabs on what's been happening..". Please! dont insult the intellegent people of Millville with this garbage. He got your "orders" to write and he went ahead on the attack. You can see right through it."I did hear about an exchange between Selectman Furno & John Dean...I have not really heard what it was about" Does he really expect people to believe that he doesnt know what happened?
I dont think the "uproar" is about the "gall" for KF to ask questions its "How" she handled herself.
In closing
"Heard I missed some fireworks"
"The new job has me traveling so I have not been able to keep tabs on what's been happening...I did hear about an exchange between Selectman Furno & John Dean...I have not really heard what it was about, but, the uproar seems to be about her having the gall to question John Dean about something...anybody who thinks that is incorrect needs to take a step back...all selectmen are elected to keep tabs on town".
Heard, not able to keep tabs, did hear an exchange, not really heard what its about BUT "the uproar seems to be about her having the gall to question John Dean about something".If I am to believe Mr Baker that he doesnt know what was going on I ask Mr Baker with all that hearsay, how can you make a comment?
"At the end of the day, it does not matter how long you have worked anywhere, it's totally irrelevant...it's also totally irrelevant how much money the person is paid to do the job...it's job performance...period." Thats right Mr Baker, in all his service with the town ,the old and the youth of Millville Mr Dean has performed.....PERIOD!
Bobby,
Like the Red Sox, you are digging yourself into a hole. Please don't insult me if we meet on the street.
As Always
Stan Wampler
It amazes me that "John Dean's behavoir" troubles you Mr. Baker..You would be well advised to check your own behavoir sir--particularly your negative comments regarding a person's personal character!! Again, before you can remove the splinter from your brother's eye, you need to see the log that may be in your own -- AMEN!!!!
Before everyone keeps putting words in my mouth...my comments are directed at "anonymous"...my point is/was that I believe all taxpayers have the right to scrutinize town employee's if they have questions...be it police, fire, selectmen, assessors, BOH, planning board, whatever... My point is no one is above the taxpayers scrutiny... John may do a great job...I wouldn't know one way or the other...my street is still taken care of by the builder...when John had a blow out with an ex-officer about who should patrol the roads, late at night during a snow storm...I was behind John 1000%...Selectman Furno has every right in the world to ask John questions or any other town employee...that was my point...the mud that has been slung at the Furno family because she asked a question is shameful.. where's the outrage ?? I know how it works around here...
MJB, you're preaching to me ??enough said on that subject...
John showed up at Public Safety Day, in a Santa suit, in August...that's what the Santa comment was about...
One of the "sketchy" comments I deleted was directed at John Dean...fact
Stan..identify yourself and I'll oblige your request...your another one who shouldn't be throwing stones...
The majority of the people don't have problem with the fact that people have questions in is manner in which they are asked.
Mrs. Furno is rude, interrupts the speaker and tells people what they should be doing. She has no class or respect for others. I wish you had seen a tape of any meeting to see how she conducts herself.
I'm sure Mr. Dean will be happy to hear that you were behind him 100% over an incident that took place about five years ago! Your behavior is right up there with Furno's. No wonder you two were like peas and carrots on the campaign trail last spring!
John showed up to an event dressed as Santa? WOW shocker to us old timers.. Please don't say he was handing out small toys....Were the children smiling?
yes, yes, and yes. I could see how some who may not like John may be taken back by his kindness.
"I'm not sure what happened there until Santa showed up in early August..that was kind of troubling...and I wasn't alone in that assessment..."
"John showed up at Public Safety Day, in a Santa suit, in August...that's what the Santa comment was about..."
Mr Baker
Did you read you original statement? What was so "troubling" about that "assessment"?
You cant get yourself out that easy.
All the things you criticize this man for are the things most people of this town love him for. Both people who were born here and people who moved here.
Becareful who you insult, it may be your down fall not his....
I leave the preaching to those with the Roman Collars, if it is all the same to you.
Try to give you some advice, sure, that is what reasonable people extend to someone who is being unreasonable, or is going off "half-cocked" as it were regarding issues.
You do remind me of a mushroom however, the "new new villagers" feed you a story (or some "crap") and you run with it. Very much like the poor mushroom, fed the crap and kept in the dark.
Bobby, you really gotta stop listening to them. Haven't you learned? I guess you might not be capable?

Go ahead let your web site sit dormite.... we know what people think...we also know your hand in all of this...just keep bluffing!
Well your childish behavior of "if I don't acknowlegde it,,,, it will go away". RUN but you can't hide! Everyone has your number and this site is a joke! Why don't you post the comments you have since you ran away! COWARD!
Admit you were wrong or at least misadvised!
It could be me...I could be an ignorant fool...maybe we could take this time to relive what John has done that none of us would have done if we held the same position...John has lived here his whole life...if we could all share some stories so us "newbies" could learn, that may be helpful...I'm serious about this.
Ah,
From the mouths of babes:
"I could be an ignorant fool"
Bobby, I couldn't have put it any better.
TTFN
Hugs and Kisses,
the blogMaster.

John Dean, Highway Surveyor
Millville Highway Department
Longfellow Municipal Center
P.O. Box 703, 8 Central Street
Millville, MA 01529
508-688-7128 (Cell)
508-883-8611 (Home)
508-883-3117 (Emergency)
The Town's Highway Department is under the direction of the elected Highway Surveyor, John Dean. John is responsible for 25 miles of Town-owned roads. John handles many important duties in order to carry out his main concern for the Town’s residents...SAFETY OF ALL ROADWAYS.
Some, but not all, of the Highway Surveyor's duties include maintenance and replacement of storm drains, maintenance of sidewalks and bridges, blacktopping, crack sealing, berm replacement, maintenance and replacement of guardrails and overseeing the Town’s snow plowing and sanding.
Throughout April and May, the Highway Surveyor oversees the sweeping of roadways of any winter debris and salts from winter storms. Throughout the summer months, John oversees a summer crew who works on brush removal and general clean-up on Town road right-of-ways to maintain the visibility for both safety and aesthetical purposes.
****The Highway Surveyor's duties are many - the townspeople should be quite proud that we have a Highway Surveyor that works with such integrity to keep our roadways safe!*****
I would imagine that this content would need to be approved by the Selectman??????

Highway Surveyor 1992-present
Millville Recreation 1962-1999
Highway Laborer 1947- 1992
Millville Fireman 1961- 1966 (Captain)
Board of Health Member 1964-1967
Trustee of the Soldiers Memorial Park 1974-present
Member of the Elementary School Building Committee
Treasurer of the Millville Fire Building Fund
On those are the things listed up until the 1998 Annual Town Report. We have the last 9 years to report on after that!
He takes the pay because he does not want to burden the town. He knows that many people struggle to pay their bills week to week and does not want to add financial burden to them. He still lives in the times thinking everyone struggles week to week and does not want to.
All around good guy. 1933 to present.
A man who I have called "friend" for as long as I can remember.
Mr. Dean this week received more money from the state for various projects around time (Lincoln, Granite, and Fisher) for over a total of $250,000. My understanding is that there is more money from grants which he applied for.
His job consist of more than cutting brush or filling pot holes. There is paper work for state funds, working with engineers for various projects. The town hires contractor to do the work but Mr. Dean oversees every project to ensure that is being done and no short cuts are taken. He does this so that the town gets the most for its money; He does it for the town! He doesn't do for any other reason.
Sure he gets paid ($12,600 in the 2006 Town Report). Divide that by 52 weeks and a minimal of 20 hours a week he makes roughly over $12.00 per hour. I heard at one Town Meeting that he actually gets paid less per hour then the labor worker he has throughout the year
.
From this Blog
You have no idea how good a job he does behind the scene, taking calls all hours of the night, on vacations, going out on calls for weather, accident related incidents.
He has worked for the people of Millville as hard as anyone ever has.
Mr Dean will be happy to know that the respect my son has for him is genuine not only because he is an adult but because he earned it.
All the things you criticize this man for are the things most people of this town love him for. Both people who were born here and people who moved here.
There are a few stories anyone else want to share what Mr Dean has done for this town.......
Maybe you and the newbies that question John Dean accomplishments need to get out there and find out what make him a good man, great community person. Instead of wanting others to inform you...
John Dean works for the voters and citizens of this town, if a selectman wants to question him fine, but they should do it with the upmost respect, he has earned this respect unlike the witch and you and others who belittle him.
You need to check yourself, you are out of line here...keep it up and you will loose. You are definitly going after the wrong person on here!!!!
Just when I think it’s finally starting to quiet down in this little town, the same old thing starts all over again. However I’m starting to realize after reading many of these posts, it’s not the entire town that’s dysfunctional, just the few folks that like to stir the pot. It doesn’t matter what you say or meant, one of them will twist it around to start another argument. These folks seem to thrive on making others miserable and taking cheap shots at the expense of others. The juvenile name calling is just that…juvenile. Grow up!
Personally, I don’t have any issues with the people that are the constantly being dragged through the mud on these websites; I actually like most of them. Face the fact folks, you keep screaming recall and started your election countdowns, but what happened last time…nothing. All you did was disrupt the lives of the people that “we the town” voted into office. Maybe you personally don’t like them, but “you” are in the minority. I may not always agree with every decision made, but I truly believe our elected officials are doing what they feel is the right thing for Millville. Additionally, if you ever hope to have a larger candidate pool, stop the constant barrage of personal attacks and childish name calling. Who the heck would want to subject themselves or their family to that?
I think many of the authors should practice the old saying, “if you don’t have anything nice to say…don’t say anything at all”. I’m not even going to waste my breath on the other blog because that small group of posters are just plain nasty. Taking shots at the Baker’s during their time of mourning was reprehensible! As low as he’s gone in the past, I can’t believe MJB actually approved it for public view. I personally have made the decision to boycott the other blog, because I truly think it’s a cancer to our town.
The Constitution guarantees our free speech and the internet is a powerful tool; let’s use it for something constructive.
